What is Brown Butter?
Before we dive into the delicious details of our Cinnamon Roll Cookies, let's talk about brown butter. Also known as beurre noisette in French, brown butter is essentially butter that has been heated until the milk solids turn brown. This simple process adds a whole new dimension of flavor and aroma to your baked goods.
Why Do We Use Brown Butter?
Now, you might be wondering why we're incorporating brown butter into our cookie recipe. The answer is simple – flavor enhancement. Brown butter carries a rich, nutty taste and imparts a delightful aroma that elevates the overall profile of the dish. In our Cinnamon Roll Cookies, it adds a subtle depth that perfectly complements the sweet and spicy cinnamon notes.
Benefits of Brown Butter:
1. Enhanced Flavor: The browning process intensifies the natural flavors of butter, giving your cookies a more complex and indulgent taste.
2. Nutty Aroma: The nutty fragrance that emanates from brown butter creates an olfactory experience that enhances the overall enjoyment of your baked treats.
3. Versatility: Brown butter can be used in a variety of recipes, both sweet and savory, adding a gourmet touch to your culinary creations.
How to Make Brown Butter:
Creating brown butter is a simple yet transformative process. Follow these steps to achieve that beautiful golden-brown elixir:
1. Melt the Butter: Start by melting unsalted butter in a saucepan over medium to low heat.
2. Continuous Stirring: Stir the butter continuously to ensure even browning and prevent burning. This takes about 5-10 minutes.
3. Watch for Color and Aroma: Keep a close eye on the butter. Once it turns a golden-brown color and releases a nutty aroma, it's ready.
4. Cooling Down: Remove the saucepan from heat and allow the brown butter to cool for about 10 minutes before incorporating it into your recipe.
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Cinnamon Sugar Balls:
In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the melted unsalted butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Scoop teaspoon-sized balls onto a parchment-lined tray. Freeze for 1-2 hours.
2. Browning the Butter:
In a saucepan over medium to low heat, brown 3/4 cup of unsalted butter. Stir continuously to avoid burning, and once browned, let it cool for about 10 minutes. Mix with sugar and brown sugar until fully combined.
3. Adding Wet Ingredients:
Add in the eggs and Amoretti Cinnamon Bun flavor (or vanilla extract) to the butter-sugar mixture. Mix until well combined.
4. Preparing the Dry Ingredients:
In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour and baking soda. Fold this mixture into the wet ingredients until fully combined.

5. Incorporating Cinnamon Sugar Balls:
Now comes the exciting part – gently fold in the frozen cinnamon sugar balls into the cookie dough. Make sure they are evenly distributed.
6. Baking:
Preheat your oven to 375°F. Scoop cookie dough onto a baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are golden brown.
7. Cream Cheese Icing:
While the cookies are cooling, prepare the cream cheese icing. Beat together room temperature cream cheese, butter, vanilla extract, and slowly add powdered sugar until smooth. Transfer the icing into a piping bag.
8. Finishing Touch:
Once the cookies are completely cooled, pipe the cream cheese icing onto each one, creating a beautiful swirl to mimic the look of a cinnamon roll.
There you have it – a delightful recipe that combines the comforting flavors of cinnamon rolls with the convenience of cookies. These Cinnamon Roll Cookies are sure to become a favorite in your household. Enjoy the process of baking and savor the sweet, cinnamon-filled results! Until next time, happy baking!
